The first North Dakota location for Canadian coffee-and-doughnuts institution Tim Hortons opens Friday on South 42nd Street in Grand Forks.

The shop, across from the Alerus Center and south of DeMers Avenue, was announced in August.

Tim Hortons is one of Canada’s most recognized brands, with nearly 3,500 locations in that country. It is less well-known in the States, though there are more than 800 shops here.

Prior to the Grand Forks store opening, the chain’s most western locations were in Michigan and Indiana.

The Grand Forks location is owned by the Icon Architectural Group, which also built the strip mall where it is located. The owners also plan to open locations in Fargo and elsewhere.

The business was started in 1964, serving only coffee and doughnuts. Its menu now includes sandwiches, soups, breakfasts and other items.
