Hundreds of people gathered at Altru Friday night to remember children who have died during or shortly after birth. It was part of Altru's annual Infant Bereavement Candlelight Memorial Service.

The community joined together in song and prayer to grieve and remember babies and children who have died. Altru's Lobby was packed with more than 150 people singing Christmas hymns and sharing stories of losing their children. Some hanging ornaments on a tree in honor of their loved ones. Others bringing ornaments from previous services to place on the tree. Organizers say the service helps families cope with the loss.

Altru Infant Bereavement Program Coordinator Toni Betting said,"So often in the past we were told that you just forget it and move on and you can never forget it. You will always remember this child. This is an opportunity to be with other families who have had losses and remember together."

The Altru Infant and Child Bereavement Program started in 1989. This was the 13th memorial service hosted by Altru.
