FARGO -- Fargo ranked third in the small-city category of Milken Institute’s annual “Best-Performing Cities” index.
Bismarck ranked No. 4 on the list, which was topped by Columbia, Mo.
No. 2 was Columbus, Ind., while Midland, Texas, was No. 5.
The next-highest small city from either Minnesota or North Dakota was St. Cloud, Minn., at No. 30. Sioux Falls, S.D., ranked 19th.
The Milken Institute list shows where jobs are being created and sustained in metro areas across the U.S. The index includes measures of job, wage and technology performance in ranking the nation’s 200 largest metropolitan areas as well as 179 smaller metro areas.
Last year, Fargo ranked fifth. In 2010, it was the top city on the list.
