The man convicted of killing two children on the Spirit Lake reservation, Valentino Bagola, will spend the rest of his life behind bars after being sentenced Monday in Fargo. After a 13-day trial the 20-year-old was convicted for the 2011 murders.

Bagola was sentenced for killing his two cousins,9-year-old Destiny Shaw DuBois and her brother, 6-year-old Travis Dubois Jr.

The two children were found dead in their home in Saint Michael on the Spirit Lake reservation in May of 2011. Along with two counts of first-degree murder, Bagola was also convicted of child abuse and sexual assault of a child.

Authorities initially suspected the kids' father, Travis Dubois Sr., may have killed his children. Dubois Sr. was arrested and confessed to the murder. Bagola also confessed when he was arrested, but prosecutors said after the trial that Bagola's confession was truthful.

"The defendant's confession had a lot of detail that only the person involved in the murder could know," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Chris Myers.

Bagola received two life sentences for the murders.
