City of Grand Forks spends thousands on snow plowing

$19,000, that's around the amount the city of Grand Forks spends on snow plowing costs from one winter storm. That $19,000 average is for a snowstorm during the week. That number can go over $20,000 a if storm hits during a weekend or holiday.

$19,000, that's around the amount the city of Grand Forks spends on snow plowing costs from one winter storm. That $19,000 average is for a snowstorm during the week. That number can go over $20,000 a if storm hits during a weekend or holiday.

Over $11,000 of the estimate goes to equipment and fuel costs, with an average of fourteen pieces of equipment out on the streets removing snow at any one time.

The remaining budget is for wages, the streets department has 32 workers who split shifts that cover a 24 hour period, a mid night crew, a 3 AM crew and day crew that work until the town is cleared.

Costs, that like anything else in winter, can be affected by the weather.

This year, the streets department has dealt with less larger storms and more patches of snowfall and ice formation.

Grand Forks Streets Superintendent Mark Aubol said, "During those type of events where it's just smaller things to deal with. We're burning more fuel. And burning more cutting edges because it isn't just one big sweep of snow cleared off and then go back to do your hauling maintenance. So it does affect the budget."

Warm spells like the weather which we experienced Friday also impacts the work of the streets department. On days where temperatures rise above freezing, workers are out clearing ice slush and snow, as well as laying salt and other chemicals down to help make the roads safe and drive-able once the temperatures drop below freezing.
