Grand Forks public schools will be closed Monday because of the extreme cold, the school district announced Sunday afternoon.
UND also announced Sunday it would stay closed from 11 p.m. Sunday until 7 a.m. Tuesday, except for essential operations.
The closing also applies to Grand Forks Air Force Base schools, Head Start and Early Childhood Special Education classes, and after-school activities, according to the district’s announcement.
Other districts in the region canceling school are Devils Lake, Fort Totten, Griggs County Central, Lakota and Minnewaukan.
East Grand Forks schools and other northwest Minnesota schools also will be closed following Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton’s decision Friday to close all public schools statewide during the period of very low temperatures and wind chills.
The National Weather Service in Grand Forks forecast an overnight low of minus 30 and a daytime high Monday of minus 18 but with wind chill values reaching minus 57 due to 15 mph winds and 20 mph gusts.
