Bismarck man pleads guilty in death of brother

26-year-old Orlen Francis Smith, Jr. has pleaded guilty to charges of voluntary manslaughter, assault resulting in serious bodily injury and assault with a dangerous weapon.

26-year-old Orlen Francis Smith, Jr. has pleaded guilty to charges of voluntary manslaughter, assault resulting in serious bodily injury and assault with a dangerous weapon.

The charges stem from a February 25 incident. Smith reportedly went to his brother Daniel Smith's home in St. Michael. During an altercation, Orlen swung a knife at his brother, piercing his heart. Daniel died at the scene. Orlen then attacked two others at the residence, puncturing one's forearm and causing a laceration on another's forehead.

The voluntary manslaughter charge carries a maximum penalty of 15 years imprisonment. The assault charge carry a maximum penalty of ten years imprisonment.
