Is it the police calling or could it be a scammer?

That's what people in the Grand Forks area may want to ask themselves if they get a call from someone claiming to be from the Grand Forks Police Department. Some people in the area have reported receiving phone calls from a man calling collect. He said he was with the Grand Forks Police Department. The caller then said he needed credit card numbers. The Police Department says it does not make collect calls. Police say if you get a call like this, call your local law enforcement.

"They could also try to string these people along and say you know what, I don't have my credit card number right now, but could you give me a call back number, I'll call you back with that number?" said Detective Mike Flannery of the Grand Forks Police Department.

Flannery says people often fall victim to these scams because they suspect the police are calling about a family member. He says police won't call people asking for credit card numbers.
