Raymond Nicholas pleaded guilty Thursday to assaulting another man last summer in Grand Forks, biting off part of his nose. In exchange for the plea, prosecutors said they would recommend a sentence of three years in prison with all but four months suspended during two years of probation. The class C felony carries a top prison sentence of five years.

Prosecutor Meredith Larson said police recovered part of the victim’s nose.

In court, Nicholas said of the July 14 event that “it was self defense. It’s just that I took it too far. … I was fighting two people at one time.”

State District Judge Sonja Clapp set his sentencing for April 2.
