Lawmakers say more work needs to be done to stop the rising number of child abuse and neglect cases in North Dakota.

Lawmakers say more work needs to be done to stop the rising number of child abuse and neglect cases in North Dakota.

9.1 out of every 1,000 children in North Dakota is a victim of child abuse and neglect. That according to recent statistics from the North Dakota Department of Human Services. That's up from 8.5 children in 2011 and 7.6 children in 2010. The National average is at 9 out of every 1,000 children.

Ramsey county, which includes Devils lake, reported 27.48 children for every 1,000. Senator Heidi Heitkamp says there is hope for the future.

Hetikamp said, "We can not as a society tolerate any form of child abuse and neglect. This is our future, and if we don't deal with it when children are young, if we don't raise healthy children, we will end up paying the consequences of that later on."

Senator Heitkamp says no one wants to see the numbers go up, but increased reports may indicate more people are using the system.
