A 27-year-old man allegedly armed with a gun sent East Grand Forks Police on a manhunt for over an hour Wednesday after an alleged domestic disturbance.
The man was hiding outside in a shed wearing only socks, a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt. It was only negative 10 degrees and a negative 30 degree wind chill. Police believe the man is a person living in the country illegally.
The incident happened around 10:30 Thursday morning as East Grand Forks police responded to a domestic disturbance call at the North Star Terrace trailer park. The man allegedly threatened his girlfriend with a gun. The call turned into an hour long manhunt.
"When officers arrived they were told that he possibly did exit the trailer with a handgun. No handgun has been located at this point but officers are still investigating," said Lt. Rod Hajicek with the East Grand Forks Police.
Border Patrol aided police in the search. The 27-year-old man was found hiding in a shed wearing minimal clothing. Once the suspect was arrested he was taken to the East Grand Forks police station and examined for signs of hypothermia.
"He was extremely cold, brought to Altru for an examination and released from there with minimal, I guess, exposure," said Hajicek.
Police say when the suspect was arrested he gave a false name. The man is suspected of being a person living in the country illegally. He may be facing several charges
"They're still investigating it - there's a possibility it would be an assault second if he did threaten with a gun which it sounds like there's at least talk of a gun being involved. Domestic abuse type charges will be filed," said Hajicek.
The case remains under investigation. The suspect could face up to seven years in prison and or a 14,000 dollar fine if charged and convicted of assault in the second degree.
