The price of propane has shot up dramatically this week. A twenty five percent increase locally in just 4 days. This at a time when temperatures are at some of their lowest of the year. And that means much higher heating bills for some.

News of propane shortages are not a new thing, some farmers this fall had a hard time getting their hands on a consistent supply to dry their corn. Now this latest price jump has some concern about how high the price will go.

On Monday you could buy a gallon of the gas for $2.89 a gallon. Thursday, it was about a $1.10 more at just under $4 a gallon. A increase of more than 25 percent in less than a week. Not welcome news for those who depend on the fuel for heat and can't afford it. Ed Christ says most of the people who apply for fuel assistance use natural gas or electricity. But with the cold and the fast climb of the price of propane that could change.

Ed Christ with the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program said, That doubly impacts people and we may see a few more with that."

Most of the people who use propane for heating do live in the country. Many of them are also farmers who also use the gas to heat their large shops, so they might really feel this spike in the price, especially if it continues to climb.
