One man is dead after an early morning fire in Devils Lake.

Firefighters were called to a house on the corner of 7th street northeast and 9th avenue around 7:00 Saturday morning. They found one man and one dog inside the home, both deceased.

Firefighters say they believe the fire started in the basement of the house and moved upward.

No other nearby structures were threatened. Assistant Fire Chief Cory Meyer says it was difficult to battle the blaze because of the damage to the home, but the fire was put out after about two hours.

"We found the floor sagging so we couldn't make much entry, so we tried another point in. As we tried another door in we found a victim inside unfortunately," said Meyer.

Authorities haven't identified the victim yet. The state fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
