Officials are holding several meetings around North Dakota this week to update farmers on the effort to develop a biofuel sugar beet industry in the state.

Fargo-based Green Vision Group and Heartland Renewable Energy out of Iowa are hoping to develop beets as a new industrial crop to turn into ethanol. North Dakota State University will lead the research. NDSU says farmer involvement is critical because the choice of a site for a processing plant is dependent on the local availability of so-called energy beets. Meetings were held today in Valley City and Jamestown. Other commercial processing isn't planned until 2017.
