Red River State Recreation Area in East Grand Forks would like to add more campsites to the park, but it won't happen this year. Because of Minnesota's financial situation, and because there are other projects that need to happen first, adding more sites will have to wait. Last year it added more than 30 new sites in a partnership with the Department of Natural Resources. Local leaders would like to expand it again, and are working on a partnership with the state of Minnesota. They say last year the camp got busy, and was full many times during the season.
"Trying to get the partnership agreement with the State of Minnesota and East Grand Forks finalized and we're working on that process because what we're trying to get is more of an equal share, 50 - 50 between the state and the city," said East Grand Forks Mayor Lynn Stauss.
Stauss says they don't yet have a timeframe for when they want to add the extra sites.
The park is expected to open again in early May.
