You soon might not be allowed to light up in Grand Forks bars and truck stops. Tomorrow the Grand Forks City Council may approve an ordinance that would extend the smoking ban to those businesses. The council will have a second reading and public hearing on the proposed law tomorrow night. What still must be decided is whether to allow smoking shelters just outside the bars. If the council approves this it must decide on the rules. For example, would a server be allowed to go out into a shelter to deliver drinks?

"I agree with the nonsmoking part, but I'm not sure that we've been fair to everyone. Some businesses have made investments in smoking rooms and stuff, and I think they should be grandfathered in," said City Council Member Art Bakken.

Even if the ordinance is passed it won't become the rule immediately. The council would have to decide on when it would take effect.
