Detectives with the Michigan Department of Corrections say a convicted murderer escaped from prison, and is accused of abducting a woman and driving her to Elkhart County where she escaped.

Police said Michael David Elliot escaped from the Ionia Correctional Facility late Sunday evening, armed with a hammer and a box cutter.

Elliot then abducted a woman, took her car and traveled more than 100 miles to Elkhart County where they stopped for gas.

The victim called 911 and took shelter in a locked bathroom. When she didn't come out, Elliot took off. Police are now encouraging Northern Indiana residents to stay behind locked doors as the vehicle has been located vacant.
