STANDING ROCK TRIBAL COUNCIL WILL NOT ALLOW VOTEWith an 8-6 vote the Standing Rock Tribal Council has decided not to allow a reservation wide vote to gauge tribal approval on the use of the Fighting Sioux Nickname and logo, despite a petition from some tribal members asking for one.
Council member Jesse Taken Alive says it would cost too much money to have a vote, and there's no guarantee the board would consider their vote. Taken Alive says the original lawsuit agreement does not cite the tribe as third party beneficiaries to it, and the board has the final say. He says they don't want to spend the money and then have their vote potentially mean nothing. The resolution says the council will re-visit the issue after the board's final decision.
The council vote was in response to a petition nickname supporters had circulated asking for a vote. Even with the more than 1-thousand signatures the council voted again it.
