NDSU Getting Research Award

The Agriculture Department says North Dakota State University is getting a $4 million award to study legumes.

The Agriculture Department says North Dakota State University is getting a $4 million award to study legumes.

USDA says the award will help focus on the healthy aspects of legumes.

A statement announcing the award says that because humans eat more legumes than any other crop, the research has the potential to reduce cholesterol and sugar levels.

USDA says the North Dakota team also will develop an online learning community to teach consumers about nutrition. The grant comes from USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture.

It is among more than $11 million in Coordinated Agricultural Project awards announced for schools Wednesday to work on plant research.
