It has been less than year in the making but the new U.S. Border and Customs Patrol building near Grand Forks is up and running.

Construction started last July on the new facility and already it is staffed and secured. It housed its first inmate earlier this week.

West on Highway-2, just past the airport, the new facility boasts plenty of land space for security, prime positioning to the highways, a new processing area, fitness room and more.

Authorities say there are a few touch-up items that need to be cleaned up. But that it is a much bigger more modern facility than the current location on 24th.

"The guys are looking forward to just the extra space where we are not sitting on top of each other. Stacking things upon other things. We have the room to operate as we should in a safe and efficient manner and that's the best benefit that we get out of this building," says Patrol Agent in Charge Daniel Salyers.

Though the mission of the grand Forks group is to provide back up to the line stations officials say they house 360 prisoners on average every year.
