Tomorrow the State Board of Higher Education will meet to talk about the future of the Fighting Sioux Nickname and logo. Some board members say its possible a motion to retire the name could be made tomorrow.
State Board of Higher Education member Grant Shaft says don't be surprised if a motion is made at tomorrow's meeting to retire the Sioux Nickname and logo. However he doesn't expect it to pass. Not yet at least.
Grant Shaft: "My personal view is I prefer to wait for the Supreme Court before we take any action I'm, uncomfortable with taking action with that pending."
On March 23rd the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a case filed by Spirit Lake nickname supporters who say the board should have to wait until November to change the name.
Board member Grant Shaft says he doesn't anticipate the name will be retired tomorrow unless the Supreme Court was to make a ruling by then. He says no action will likely be taken on the future of the name until the court has made its final ruling.
Grant Shaft: "If the Supreme Court rules in the board's favor and indication from Standing Rock are there will be no vote a motion will likely be made to retire the name."
Tuesday the Standing Rock Tribal Council said they will not allow a reservation wide vote. Shaft says that reaffirms their position it will never happen and its time to move on.
Grant Shaft: "If it's clear Standing Rock will not place a ballot soon I think it will be problematic for board members who are looking to that June date with regards to the Summit League."
June 1 will be the next time the Summit League will meet and could consider UND's application. Shaft says they can't wait beyond that as it could hurt their shot at admission.
Grant Shaft: "Every month you push it off you back off on these various dates and visits, but waiting until fall it may push it back another year."
Shaft says if not Thursday look for retirement at the board's May meeting.
The Summit League said it will not consider UND's application until the nickname issue has been resolved.
