EGF Council members hold open vote when appointing Ward 2 replacement

The East Grand Forks City Council will have an open vote when it appoints a Ward 2 replacement next week. Members are debating the selection of a candidate for the open seat of Ron Vonasek, who died in December.

At Tuesday night's work session, council members appeared to agree to use a written ballot for the choice. One former council member that he would contact the Minnesota attorney general's office about the plan for a secret ballot.

The Court of Appeals reasoned that a meeting is not 'open' to the public if voting is conducted in secret because it denies the public the right to observe the decision-making process.
