Now that the Sioux name and logo are retired, many are wondering what will happen to the Ralph Engelstad Arena. The Ralph's management team says it is in shock that this change was made. The Ralph's Board of directors is going to meet and talk about what to do next.
Today's retirement of the Fighting Sioux Nickname and logo blindsided the people who manage the Ralph Englestad Arena.
Jody Hodgson/General Manager: "Were shocked and surprised by the events that happened today and quite honestly we don't know what the next step is."
The arena and its thousands of logos and signage could be greatly affected by today's retirement of the Sioux nickname. The settlement with the NCAA says to host post-season play about 1800 of the 2500 logos in the building would have to be removed. Hodgeson says no way.
Jody Hodgson/General Manager: "The recommendation that will come from my office and from my board that we never change anything at the Ralph Englestad Arena and we never allow anyone on the premises to change anything at the Ralph I think it will be an absolute shame and be an absolute crime. "
Hodgson thinks today's decision is a huge let down to the people on the Sioux Reservations who fought to keep the nickname.
Jody Hodgson/General Manager: " I absolutely can't believe what happened today has happened. I think its a terrible slap in the face and a kick in the ass to the people on Spirit Lake and more than 1000 people at Standing Rock that have expressed their interest in retaining the name and logo."
Hodgson says this wasn't a fair end to the Fighting Sioux fight.
Jody Hodgson/General Manager:"What you got is a small, very small, very vocal minority of people that have created enough controversy and enough fatigue to wear down those who are supposed to have the backbone and the intelligence to see through those types of tactics. "
UND Athletics will hold a press conference on the nickname change Friday morning.
