GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) - University of North Dakota coaches and

athletes say they are shocked and disappointed that the school is

dropping its Fighting Sioux nickname.

The decision by the North Dakota Board of Higher Education to

retire the nickname had been on hold until a ruling Thursday by the

state Supreme Court. The Fighting Sioux nickname and logo will be

dropped following the 2010-2011 season.

UND officials believe the change opens the door for the school

to get into the Summit League. UND women's basketball coach Gene

Roebuck says that should be a good thing for his program, but says

if he had the choice he would pick the logo over the league.

UND hockey player Chay Genoway (JEN'-o-way) says losing the

nickname gives him a sick feeling in his stomach.
