Fargo, N.D. (WDAY TV) -When most of us are rolling over in bed, preparing for a few more hours sleep, Grandma Jane is already rolling out the dough.

Jane Swanson turned 89 today.

The longtime baker at Moxie java downtown loves her routine, even if it means waking up before the birds.

Long before the sun is up, the kitchen at Moxie Java on Broadway is full of farm kitchen aromas.

The twists, the cookies and the muffins.

Baking bread. Frosted goodies.

And the matriarch of the kitchen, is celebrating her 89th birthday today,

Jane Swanson, 89-year-old baker: “That is pretty old, isn't it.”

by working. She wouldn't have it any other way.

Swanson: “When you get this age and you can still work, you have a lot to be thankful for.”

For 30 years, Jane Swanson has been waking up early.

Swanson: “Two o’ clock.”

Daughter Nancy picks her up around 4 a.m..

Swanson: “Whoever picks me up does not have to wait.”

To come to the family business downtown.

Nancy Nerland, Jane’s daughter: “It is a blessing, and not everyone can have the privilege to work side by side with your mom for that many years.”

Today, the flowers rolled in. Grandma Jane, as everyone calls her,

Swanson: “He is good to me, a good son in law.”

Is celebrating number 89.

Swanson: “I had someone else bring me flowers today too.”

And so by the time the first customers arrive here at 6 a.m., Grandma Jane's day is already half over but the baking in the back continues.

Grandchildren work with her in this third generation store.

It is in their DNA. Coffee, cake and customers.

Tabitha Moerke, Jane’s granddaughter: “For me to come here every day and work with her,

it is unreal.”

And like the flow of sugar and spice here, there is no end to Jane Swanson's determination to keep working.

Swanson: “I am thankful I can come here and work.”

After all, this is her kitchen.

And Jane confesses she does sneak a little nap in the afternoons, once she gets home.
