It’s basketball night in Grafton, North Dakota and the Spoilers are hosting one of the state’s best in Cavalier.
But no matter how loud the crowd cheers, it won’t be as loud as when Blake Mania swept the state.
Brandy George, Thompson head coach, “I’ve been in basketball for 14 years and I haven’t seen a gym react like that before."
Blake Bjornson, usually serves as the Spoilers super fan. However, on Blake’s special night, it was the crowd cheering for him.
Bjornson, “He rolled the ball. And I made a buzzer beater.”
Wendy Bjornson, Blake's mother, “I had no doubt in my mind that he would probably, if he was given the chance make a basket because he has a pretty sweet three point shot. It was getting down to literally the last second and it was nerve racking but he pulled it off.”
Not only changing Blake’s life forever, but others too.
George, “It’s something I told the kids, ten years down the road, they might not remember the score or who won the game but I think that shot is one that is going to stick in peoples minds for the rest of their lives. I know it will for me.”
The senior missed a few shots against the Tommies, yet, made it when it mattered the most.
Mike Bjornson, Blake's father, “He had a lot of chances and they wouldn’t go in and wouldn’t go in. A perfect ending to a perfect career.”
Wendy Bjornson, “I told him he’s retired and he is retiring at the top of his game so there’s no better time to retire.”
As far as Blake’s basketball days, they might not be over just yet.
Wendy Bjornson, “They are interested in Blake come join the basketball team for Special Olympics so that’s definitely something we will look into now so he can come out of retirement.”
