Stenehjem: Board "Squandered" Nickname Retention Opportunity
North Dakota's Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says the state Board of Higher Education "squandered" an opportunity to get tribal approval for the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux nickname.
North Dakota's Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem
says the state Board of Higher Education "squandered" an opportunity to get tribal approval for the
University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux nickname.
Stenehjem had negotiated a settlement with the NCAA that gave
UND and the board three years to get the approval of the two Sioux
tribes in the state.
Stenehjem says he does "not" think they used the
time wisely.
The board is retiring the nickname.
Board member Grant Shaft says he strongly disagrees with
Stenehjem's analysis.
He says efforts to get tribal support were "exhaustive."
