The city of Lakota has found a new way to get kids involved in the community.

The city is starting a Youth Council, which is similar to a city council, except it's run by students. There will be 5 council members in grades 9 through 12. They will be chosen in an election on November 3. They will get to plan activities for kids in the city. They will have a budget of 12-hundred dollars per year, which has already been donated. Youth council members will attend at least 3 city council meetings each year...so the two groups can share ideas. Mayor Ed Pawlikowski says there has been interest from people of all ages in the community.

Ed Pawlikowski: We wish the youth in Lakota to learn more about city government, so we plan on running the youth council as we would city council meetings, where they actually have to take notes and they follow open meeting rules.

Youth council members will be sworn in and have their first meeting in January.
