Recycling Old Sneakers Into New Athletic Surfaces

Many of us have an old worn out pair of tennis shoes in our closet that we don't wear anymore. Some of these shoes will end up in landfills, but they can be recycled.

The University of North Dakota now has five drop-off locations for those old sneakers. They will be sent to Nike, where they will be ground up and recycled. The foam, rubber, and fabric can be used for athletic surfaces, such as tracks, basketball and tennis courts.

"We just thought this would be a perfect time, and we extended this collection a week before and a little bit after Earth Week just to help people remember to bring their tennis shoes in," said UND Earth Week Events Coordinator Kim Ruliffson.

There are boxes in the Wellness Center and Memorial Union Building. You can drop off your shoes any time before April 26.
