The Greenway is a popular place for people to walk, rollerblade, and soon, maybe grow a garden. Greenway leaders say they haven't decided yet where exactly where the community garden will be. One concern is that the Greenway floods and often stays wet for a long time. They are considering a few locations near downtown that would not be affected by spring flooding. They still aren't sure if they would divide the space into individual plots or have it be one big garden that everyone would work in. Organizers hope that people will be able to plant later this spring.
"It really supports the mayor's Green3 initiative. There's a lot of talk about how providing local produce can be a positive both for our health and for our environment," said Greenway Manager Melanie Parvey.
Parvey says there's been a lot of interest in a community garden on the Greenway, since not everyone can get to the existing garden on the west side of Grand Forks.
