Woman Charged After 3-year-old Ends Up on Highway near Devils Lake

A deputy got the child safely off the road Wednesday night.

An 18-year-old Grand Forks woman has been charged with a crime after a 3-year-old child was found standing in the middle of state Highway 20 just south of Devils Lake.

Sheriff Steve Nelson says a deputy got the child safely off the road last night.

Authorities say Chelsea Walkingeagle had been baby-sitting the child at a nearby apartment building and failed to notice the child had wandered off. Authorities believe she had gone into a garage to smoke marijuana.

State's Attorney Lonnie Olson says Walkingeagle is charged with felony child abuse or neglect, which carries a maximum punishment of five years in prison.
