Bill and Barb Fahey have taught dance lessons at Whitey's in East Grand Forks for more than seven years. Now the couple are celebrating a big "step" of their own. Tomorrow they will have a new reason to dance, as they will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.
"It doesn't seem like that long," they said.
Barb and Bill Fahey married on April 30, 1960. Now, 50 years later, the Faheys still have a spring in their step. And they still teach other couples how step, turn, and dip three times a week at Whitey's.
"It's something they can do together, both know what they're doing and just be comfortable with. They don't have to be stars," said Bill Fahey.
They've been teaching dance since 1967. It started when Barb volunteered them to teach ballroom dance classes for the Grand Forks Adult Education Program.
"The first classes were really rough because we had to take apart what we did in order to show anyone else," said Barb Fahey.
Those classes have now become "Let's Dance". The couple have two instructional videos to take their dance lessons beyond the classes. They say they have never taken a lesson themselves, but they learn from each other and from watching others.
"We start playing off of them a little bit and it works. It's fun, it really is," said Bill Fahey.
Now, with the celebration of their golden anniversary, the Faheys plan to continue teaching dance lessons. They say it's helped strengthen their marriage and bring them closer together.
"It's helped. I think the classes have helped us be nice to each other!" they said.

The Faheys plan to celebrate their anniversary with their three daughters in Bemidji this summer.
