IRS Warns of Bogus EmailThe IRS is alerting taxpayers in South Dakota and North Dakota to a phony e-mail.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The IRS is alerting taxpayers in South Dakota and North Dakota to a phony e-mail about underreported income that the agency said is being used in a "phishing" scam to gain access to personal information.
Spokesperson Carrie Resch said the IRS does not send unsolicited e-mails to taxpayers and that anyone receiving an e-mail claiming to come from the IRS should not open any attachments or click on any links.
She said doing so could download a computer virus that gives the sender access to security passwords and banking information.
