Members of The Standing Rock Tribal Council voted today to hold off taking any action needed for a reservation wide vote on the Fighting Sioux nickname.

The Standing Rock Tribal Council took no action on the petition which has the names of more than 1,000 tribal members calling for a reservation wide vote.

That vote would give members of the Standing Rock Tribe a say on UND's use of the Fighting Sioux nickname.

The North Dakota Higher Ed Board has retired the nickname in advance of a November 30th court deadline.

However board members said they could revisit that decision if Standing Rock's gives its permission to use the Sioux logo. Petition organizer Archie Fool Bear says the council is stalling on the issue. He says they are doing that by asking to see documentation from the Higher Ed Board saying the name is officially retired.
