KELLEY: NICKNAME PHASE OUT STARTS NOW, WILL TAKE TIME

UND President Robert Kelley intends to start the retirement of the Fighting Sioux nickname right away, but says the process will be a slow one. He is asking the State Board of Higher Education to extend the deadline for the complete transition to August 15, 2011.

UND President Robert Kelley intends to start the retirement of the Fighting Sioux nickname right away, but says the process will be a slow one. He is asking the State Board of Higher Education to extend the deadline for the complete transition to August 15, 2011.

He spoke today at the last UND Senate meeting about the UND nickname and logo transition.

The president plans to form three task groups to help ease the transition process.

One task group will plan and implement a process to respectfully retire the nickname and logo.

The second group is communications: finding out ways to keep the public informed throughout the transition process.

The third group will be in charge of selecting the new nickname and logo.

Kelley told the UND senate that he plans to start phasing out the phrase "Fighting Sioux" immediately.
