Nickname Supporters Hope Vote Petition Certified Friday

"Fighting Sioux" nickname supporters are optimistic that a petition to put the nickname to a public vote on the reservation will be certified on Friday.

"Fighting Sioux" nickname supporters are optimistic that a petition to put the nickname to a public vote on the reservation will be certified on Friday.

Nickname supporters met with Standing Rock Tribal Chairman Charlie Murphy today to talk about a possible tribe-wide vote on the nickname.

Nickname supporter Tom Iron says they will meet again on Friday, when the tribal secretary will review and certify the petition and work with the chairman on the next step.

Iron says Murphy wants the secretary to start moving on the petition so that the certified petition can be presented to the tribal council for consideration.

The North Dakota Board of Higher Education has already voted to retire the nickname.

But some board members say they could revisit that decision if Standing Rock gives its approval.
