The Grand Forks - East Grand Forks Metropolitan Planning Organization met today to talk about whether they can silence train whistles through town.

The MPO wants to make railroad crossings safer and quieter. The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway's report looked at how much it will cost to make crossings safer, and those numbers were higher than the MPO expected.

The group plans some more on-site visits. They want to compare their findings with the BNSF report.

"We identified a couple of small cost item issues when we formally made a request to BNSF to start scheduling those improvements so we could get those crossings quieted," said MPO Executive Director, Earl Haugen.

The board plans on to discuss their findings next Wednesday.
