A young black bear found roaming near a Newfolden, MN daycare was shot and killed by Sheriff's deputies after attempts to chase the bear out of town failed.
Marshall County Sheriff John Novacek tells WDAZ they got the call about 3:00pm Wednesday that a small black bear was in Newfolden near the edge of town. Novacek says the bear had a Department of Natural Resources collar on it indicating it had been a nuissance bear before. Novacek later learned it had been previously captured and released to the Aggasiz National Wildlife Refuge which is about 20 miles from where the bear was found in Newfolden.
Novacek says deputies tried for about two hours to chase the bear out of town, but it was growling and showing aggression towards them. It was also near a daycare and Novacek says parents were growing concerned for their children's safety. The DNR told authorities they didn't have an officer close enough to send to tranquilize the bear, so Novacek decided it had to be shot. The black bear was shot by deputies about 5:00pm.
Photos of the bear were taken by WDAZ viewer Allison Shetler of Newfolden.
