EGF Considers $20.00/Month Street Fee For Residents

A task force is likely to recommend a monthly fee for all East Grand Forks property owners, with a lower special assessment when roads are built or repaired on their streets.

East Grand Forks is looking at a big change in how properties are assessed for road repair.

The numbers are still being worked out, but a task force is likely to recommend a monthly fee for all East Grand Forks property owners, with a lower special assessment when roads are built or repaired on their streets.

The city is trying to come up with a way to make road special assessments more "fair."

Under this plan, those living along non-assessed state-aid roads would pay the fee they are estimating would be about $20.00 dollars. But would remain assessment free.

Scott Huizenga/EGF CITY ADMINISTRATOR: "We are proposing at this point is to impose a monthly fee to all residents and when reconstruction comes your way, the resident would only pay for 30 percent of that cost rather then 100."

Huizenga say since this would be such a different way of providing money for streets, there is still a long way to go.

The council would have to approve the proposal and possibly the state legislature.
