Where To Make Cuts In EGF?

A balance between public safety and budget cuts…that's what was at the heart of a discussion involving filling an East Grand Forks police officer position at tonight's city council meeting.

The city of East Grand Forks, like many other Minnesota cities, is looking at where to make cuts because of less financial aid from the state.

An officer at the East Grand Forks Police Station has resigned. Tonight the city council talked about whether or not to replace that officer.

Some council members say they need to start making cuts, but others say the Police Department is not the right place.

Council Member Henry Tweten says, “We've had some very, very major police confrontations here in the last two, three years, and we don't want our police outgunned. We'll squeeze someplace else as far as I'm concerned.”

If the position is not filled, that would mean two people patrolling during one of the shifts, and if an officer requested vacation time, only one officer would be on the street during that time.
