SIOUX SUPPORTER: COUNCIL WILL DECIDE ON VOTE NEXT WEEK

Supporters on the Standing Rock Reservation say the tribe's council will vote next week on a tribe-wide referendum on UND's use of the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo.

Supporters on the Standing Rock Reservation say the tribe's council will vote next week on a tribe-wide referendum on UND's use of the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo.

Nickname supporter Archie Fool Bear says he met with Standing Rock Tribal Chair Charlie Murphy Thursday.

Fool Bear says Murphy is putting the issue on the agenda of the June 3 meeting of the tribal council.

The tribe will vote at that meeting on certifying the petitions within a set amount of days, and on holding a tribe-wide vote on the Sioux nickname on a certain date after the petitions are certified.

Fool Bear says Murphy wants the issue dealt with, and says it has been put off too long.

We could not reach Murphy for comment.

The state Board of Higher Education has decided to retire the

nickname, but the issue might be revisited if Standing Rock holds a vote and supports the nickname.
