The Standing Rock tribe has postponed a vote on a tribe-wide referendum on UND's use of the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo until next week.
Standing Rock Tribal Chair Charlie Murphy said they did not have enough tribal council members available to meet today.
The tribe will now try to meet and vote June 9 on certifying the petitions within a set amount of days, and on holding a tribe-wide vote on the Sioux nickname on a certain date after the petitions are certified. Murphy says he is going to find out from each member if they plan to attend the meeting so that the issue can be voted on.
Supporter Archie Fool Bear is hopeful the Sioux nickname issue will be brought to a public tribe-wide vote.
The North Dakota state Board of Higher Education has decided to retire the nickname, but the issue might be revisited if Standing Rock holds a vote and supports
