Man Arrested After Griggs County Standoff

Griggs County authorities spent Thursday night with guns drawn in a standoff with a man wanted in Nelson County for assault.

Griggs County authorities spent Thursday night with guns drawn in a standoff with a man wanted in Nelson County for assault.

Griggs County Sheriff Bob Hook says his department got a call about 6:00pm Thursday that Nelson County needed help arresting a man for a domestic assault. Griggs County authorities tracked the man to a rural home northwest of Cooperstown. When authorities went to the door of the home suspect Matthew Helm pulled a handgun on deputies and threatened them with it. Sheriff's deputies pulled away from the home and set up a perimeter. After a one-and-a-half hour standoff with Helm he surrendered himself to authorities. Helm, 39, was arrested and taken to the Barnes County Jail.

Authorities later found a number of guns in the home, including two handguns and four long guns.
