Authorities say three men arrested for robbery were there the night Matthew Sheppard of Thief River Falls was stabbed to death.
Bryan Johnson, Kyle Tangen, and Jaris Lane have been arrested on robbery charges stemming from the incident. Tangen and Johnson are charged with aggravated robbery. Lane is charged with aiding and abetting aggravated robbery, and all three are charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery.
They are in jail in Pennington County.
Thief River Falls police say they got a call about 10:15pm April 26 from a nurse after Matthew Shepard, 23, was dropped off at the Thief River Falls emergency room with stab wounds.
The criminal complaints released Friday say that the three men dropped Sheppard off at the emergency room and left. Sheppard died of stab wounds to the abdomen.
A suspect in the case was arrested and later charged with a drug crime. Daniel Molstad, 19, is charged with fifth degree conspiracy to commit a controlled substance crime. He has not been charged in connection to Sheppard's death.
Authorities say Johnson, Tangen, Lane and Matthew Sheppard took Daniel Molstad out to the country to beat him up over drugs and owed money. Molstad, Johnson, and Tangen had knives.
The complaint says that Molstad told authorities he thought the men were going to kill him, and that he pulled out a knife and swung it in an attempt to defend himself while the men, including Sheppard were beating and kicking him. Molstad says the men left him in the ditch. Sheppard was later dropped off at the emergency room and died.
The three men made their first court appearance Friday. The robbery charges the three face are felonies.
