Deadly Accident In Grand Forks

Two people are dead, three others hurt, and a man is facing charges after an accident at South Columbia Road and 17 Avenue South in Grand Forks.

Two people are dead, three others hurt, and a man is facing charges after an accident at South Columbia Road and 17 Avenue South in Grand Forks around 1:40 Saturday morning.

UND Police say James Freestone, 21, of Grand Forks, and Tasha Brenno, 19, of Grand Forks, died.

Kathryn Olson, 22, of Grand Forks, and Michael Badurek, 18, of Grand Forks, were transported to Altru. All four were in one vehicle.

Celso Garza, 24, of East Grand Forks, was also hurt and taken to Altru. He was the only person in his vehicle.

UND Police say they stopped Garza in the 100 block of North Columbia Road for driving through a red light at Columbia Road and University Avenue. When the officer approached Garza's vehcile, Garza fled at a high rate of speed.

Police say Garza was released from Altru and is now being held at the Grand Fors County Corrections Center. He's charged with two counts of manslaughter, two counts of reckless endangerment, DUI, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, open container of an alcoholic beverage, driving while driver's license is revoked, driving through a red light, and fleeing a police officer in a vehicle.

A third vehicle in the accident has minor damage, but the two people in the vehicle were not hurt.
