Imagine finding out that your son only weeks old has a rare form of cancer. That's exactly what a Grand Forks family is going through.
Having a baby was a life changing experience for the Ullrich family. And now they are facing even more, having a child diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. As their baby will go through final treatment next week, the family stays optimistic.
Lindsey and Michael Ullrich had baby Austin just 7 months ago. Proud parents of a healthy baby boy,and then 6 weeks later,
"I was devastated, I just couldn't imagine!" Lindsey said, "He was just so healthy and happy, I just couldn't believe it was true."
Austin was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
"AML is usually just in people over the age of 60 I think, so the oncologist had never seen anything like it in someone so young." Lindsey said.
Since the diagnosis...the family has had to make a few sacrifices.
"I had just graduated, looking for a job and then he came along." Michael said, "I was almost there, but after the diagnosis we moved in with my parents and got rid of our apartment, going back and forth to Rochester."
Each treatment is around 40 days, and with just one more round the family is hopeful.
"Just monitoring after that. You just don't want to get one of those calls that it's back again, you know." Lindsey said.
Austin remains strong, and his family,is right behind him. The Ullrich family has had a lot of help from their families, but with extensive medical bills, they could use your help. Contributions are being accepted under the Austin Ullrich Fund at Bremer Bank in Grand Forks.
