A tribal council meeting did not happen again as planned on the Standing Rock reservation on UND's use of the Fighting Sioux nickname.
Nickname supporter Archie Fool Bear says when he showed up to the meeting this morning, there was not even close to a quorum of tribal council members present. A quorum on the reservation is considered 11 council members. The meeting was rescheduled last week to today because they also did not have a quorum present.
Fool Bear says the tribe will now try to meet and vote next Tuesday, June 15, on certifying the petitions within a set amount of days and on holding a tribe-wide vote on the Sioux nickname after the petitions are certified.
Fool Bear is hopeful the Sioux nickname issue will be brought to a public tribe-wide vote. He says tribal chair, Charlie Murphy, wants the issue resolved.
The North Dakota state Board of Higher Education has decided to retire the nickname, but the issue might be revisited if Standing Rock holds a vote and supports the nickname.
