What was a shell a few short weeks ago is now a house thanks to the Red River Habitat for Humanity.

What was a shell a few short weeks ago is now a house thanks to the Red River Habitat for Humanity.

Volunteers are near completion of two houses in the area. The project is mainly funded by Thrivent Financial, but job supervisor Herb Valgrean said the houses are the products of many people. He notes many, including Excel Energy and local churches had a hand in the speedy builds. The houses are intended for families with lower incomes who otherwise might not be able to own a house. But Valgrean said there are benefits for him too.

" I'm a retired teacher so I guess it's just nice to have some other things to do. You meet a lot of people and it keeps me out of my wife's hair for a while. It's just good community service."

Valgrean said the two houses on North 24th and Cherry Street are at the sheet-rocking stage. The goal is to start a third house in the coming weeks.
