Primary Seat Belt Law Makes Big Impact

It's been one year since the Primary seat belt law in Minnesota took affect.

It's been one year since the Primary seat belt law in Minnesota took affect. The Law allows police to pull you over just for not wearing a seat belt.

Officials say not wearing your seat belt is one of the major causes of deaths in accidents. Minnesota Police officers and troopers are trying to change that.

It's one of the leading causes of death in car crashes...not wearing your seat belt. According to East Grand Forks Police, people need to buckle up to stay safe.

Andy Boen/EGF Police Department:"For the safety aspect people are starting to realize that an accident can happen at anytime, any place no matter if it's in town or out in the country."

Since the start of the Primary seat belt law, tickets went up 100 percent to 55 thousand citations. But in East Grand Forks, 80 percent of the people are not taking that risk according to city seat belt surveys.

Andy Boen/EGF Police Department:"Myself was doing those surveys I could tell that people who were not buckled up were buckling up just for the simple fact of seeing us out and visible. "

Wearing you seat belt is only a click away. But if you don't wear your seat belt the driver is not the only one who can get a ticket.

Luke Millette/MN Highway Patrol:"One thing a lot of people don't know is that drivers and passengers can get their own seat belt tickets, not just the driver. "

Even thought authorities say it's hard to spot drivers not wearing their seat belts on the highway, they say it's up to the driver to be responsible.

Luke Millette/MN Highway Patrol:"I guess I'd rather not write any tickets at all for not wearing your seat belt, but that is up to the people driving to decide whether to use their seat belt or not."

Eighty percent of accident deaths in Minnesota are happening right here in the Greater Minnesota area.
