Controversy Over Police Chief's Position in EmeradoSome people who live in Emerado had concerns tonight, because of a decision some of them feel is out of their hands.
At the Emerado City Council meeting tonight, new and returning city officials were appointed, all but city's police chief.
Council members and people in Emerado listened tonight as Emerado Police Chief Tim Gillespie was not reappointed to that position.
Several people we talked to want Chief Gillespie to keep his job and his title.
Some people who live in Emerado had concerns tonight, because of a decision some of them feel is out of their hands.
"I'm very upset. I mean the whole community showed up today to support Tim Gillespie and to let Brent know, you know the new mayor, that we are very against this." concerned citizen Ginny Valentino said.
New Emerado mayor Brent Aspinwall did not re-appoint Tim Gillespie as police chief tonight.
"Some of the citizens have come to me and talked about the way he conducts business. So I just wanted to verify and talk to him and see where he stands." Aspinwall said.
Aspinwall wouldn't comment on his reasons for questioning Gillespie as police chief. Gillespie has been chief of police in Emerado for over 10 years and says he didn't get any answers tonight as to why his job is on the line.
"He didn't want to appoint us or appoint me I guess.” Said police chief Tim Gillespie, “Basically I've been here for over 10 and a half years or longer, and I guess as you can see there was a lot of people upset and shocked, and I'm one of them."
Some of the people we talked to are confused about the situation.
"I'm very concerned when law enforcement does their job, I just cannot see why anyone would want to suspend them." said concerned resident Bernice Kvasager.
There will be another meeting on July 12 to talk about Gillespie's position. In the meantime, he is keeping his options open.
"I did get a hint of this and I already talked to the legal aid department there and they told me if this happened they would have an attorney take the case and we'll go from there." said Gillespie.
The re-appointments like that of police chief happen every two years.
But up to this point, Gillespie has always been reappointed without question.
